Want to
move more but don’t know how to begin exactly? Your municipal recreation department may be just the way to start, especially if you “need to get out more.” Depending on where you live, you might find a whole new set of fitness-minded friends at classes, programs and events sponsored by city recreation departments.
Some of the best bets around state:
Recognized as one of the country’s premier recreation and parks departments, the
Recreation and Park Commission for the Parish of East Baton Rouge provides hundreds of opportunities for exercise, from golf courses and tennis courts, to exercise classes all over the parish for kids, for seniors – for everyone. Aerobics, tai chi, yoga and even ballet are some of the offerings at more than 40 BREC recreation centers.
The City of Lake Charles Department of Recreation and Parks lists more than 50 activities – from aerobics to weightlifting. Team and individual athletic and exercise programs are offered at more than 30 recreation centers.
Adult softball and youth sports are the main offerings from the Lafayette Recreation and Parks Department, but classes such as water aerobics for seniors can be found at one if its 10 community centers.
Clinics featuring professional instruction are available at the three tennis centers and three golf courses maintained by the Shreveport Public Assembly and Recreation department. SPAR also offers activity programs for teens and seniors as well as a therapeutic recreation program.
