The school’s participation kicked off Tuesday, Oct. 23 with a wellness event attended by New Orleans fullback Mike Karney. Mike discussed how fitness helped him, and how it was important even when he was younger. The second-grade students entertained the crowd with a dance to the program’s theme song “Do the 2.” Students received kid-friendly activity books, pedometers and walking logs to track their daily steps, while the school’s teachers got information on helping their students make healthier lifestyle choices. Afterwards, the students learned more about their health by visiting the Brain Dome, part of the Smart Bodies program sponsored by the LSU Ag Center and the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana Foundation. |

“We are thrilled to join the Louisiana 2 Step program,” said Trinity Episcopal Day School Principal Patricia Swenson. “Fitness and nutrition and the discovery of facts about them are easily integrated into day-to-day elementary education. For example, students can use math skills to figure out how long it would take to gain 10 pounds if they ate 500 extra calories every day.” Trinity Episcopal teachers and Blue Cross staff believe that incorporating the “eat right and move more” message into elementary education will help Louisiana’s children face the challenge of obesity in our state. |
