Governor Bobby Jindal has proclaimed March National Nutrition Month® in Louisiana.
Every day in March, in conjunction with this month’s observation, the ADA’s website, www.eatright.org, is spotlighting a popular nutrition myth and the facts that dispel the myth. An example is the widely held perception that body weight is a reliable indicator of a healthful diet, that is, “skinny equals healthy.”
Not necessarily, says the ADA. “The best measure of a person’s diet and overall health is a combination of factors, including weight, activity level, body mass index, blood pressure and cholesterol level, to name a few.”
The theme of National Nutrition Month® this year is “Nutrition: It’s a Matter of Fact.” Among the top 10 tips offered on the ADA website are these:
- Eating right doesn’t have to be complicated. Use mypyramid.gov to develop a personalized plan for lifelong health.
- Think nutrient-rich rather than “good” or “bad” foods. The majority of your food choices should be packed with vitamins, minerals, fiber and other nutrients – and lower in calories.
- Balancing physical activity and a healthful diet is your best recipe for managing weight and promoting overall health and fitness. Read food labels to get nutrition facts that help you make smart food choices quickly and easily.
- Look at the big picture. No single food or meal makes or breaks a healthful diet. Your total diet is the most important focus for healthful eating.
