Ochsner Lists Top 10 Superfoods

Ochsner Clinic nutritionists have come up with a list of 10 “superfoods,” bursting with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. How many of these nutritional powerhouses, full of good fats and micronutrients and known for their cancer-fighting and blood pressure lowering ability, are in your diet?

  1. Peanut butter – its good fats combat heart disease and diabetes 
  2. Avocado – fiber plus vitamins C and B6 and folate for your heart
  3. Chili peppers – capsaicin in these boosts metabolism and helps with weight loss
  4. Watermelon – contains the cancer-fighting compound lycopene
  5. Whole-grain cereal – one bowl per day will stabilize your blood sugar
  6. Blueberries – a real antioxidant superpower, plus vitamin C and fiber
  7. Apples – roughly 80 calories and no fat, plus cholesterol-lowering pectin
  8. Salmon – studies indicate it fights prostate cancer
  9. Eggs – prevent heart and eye disease and contain lutein, a powerful antioxidant
  10. Turneric – this exotic spice helps ease arthritis and muscle pains
