Egg Breakfast Enhances Weight Loss

Overweight adults who eat a breakfast consisting of two eggs as part of a reduced-calorie diet typically lose more weight and have more energy than those who eat bagels for breakfast says Nikhil V. Dhurandhar, PhD, lead researcher and associate professor in the infection and obesity lab at Pennington Biomedical Research Center,

Dhurandhar’s study supports previous research that showed that people who ate eggs for breakfast felt more satisfied and ate fewer calories at the next meal. In the study, egg eaters lost 65 percent more weight than the control group.

In addition, researchers found that when the subjects who ate a bagel breakfast were compared with those who ate two eggs for breakfast as part of a reduced-calorie diet, it was also found that men and women on the egg-breakfast showed a 61 percent greater reduction in BMI.

“People have a hard time adhering to diets and our research shows that choosing eggs for breakfast can dramatically improve the success of a weight loss plan,” said Dhurandhar. “Apparently, the increased satiety and energy due to eggs helps people better comply with a reduced-calorie diet.”
