Diabetes and the 2

Diabetes is a serious condition that can cause heart attack, stroke, blindness, kidney failure or loss of feet or legs. But, this disease can be prevented or even treated.

At its core, diabetes stops the production of insulin in the body. Insulin is used to break down starches, sugars and other foods. This stops cells from getting the energy they need to function properly.

To determine if you have diabetes, you should get a glucose test from your physician. If your (fasting) blood glucose level is over 100 mm/dL when fasting, you have prediabetes and should discuss treatment options with your doctor to keep your glucose level under control. If your (fasting) blood glucose level is 126 mm/dL or higher, you have diabetes and should be under a doctor’s care to control your condition.

Am I at Risk?

Even if you haven’t taken a glucose test, you can find out your risk level for diabetes. Family history, weight and physical activity play a major part in your potential for developing this disease. The American Diabetes Association has an interactive test to determine your risk. If you think you might have diabetes or would like to know more about your risk for developing this disease, consult with your physician.

It has been shown that proper nutrition and exercise can help reduce your risk of developing diabetes, so remember to continue eating right and moving more!
