According to researchers at LSU’s Pennington Biomedical Research Center, a calorie-restricted diet does not seem to bring on bone loss in young, overweight adults.
The study was conducted by Leanne M. Redman, PhD and some of her colleagues at Pennington and included research on 46 overweight men and women for a period of six months. Redman’s study, which was published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, found that overweight, young, adults can participate and benefit in a moderate, calorie-restricted (25%) diet without having to worry about losing bone mass as long as they get sufficient amounts of calcium and other necessary nutrients.
In prior studies, Pennington researchers found that calorie-restricted diets also decrease the rate of aging and increase longevity. For more information about this study or other studies conducted at Pennington, visit www.pbrc.edu.
